A matchmaker for beans. The quiz-driven boxes have introduced me to roasters I'd never have found on my own.

Design & Build

Out of the box, the build is reassuringly heavy — stainless steel front, real metal portafilter, no clattery plastic. The dial action is tight. Two weeks in, no rattles, no wobble. The water tank pulls out easily for refills, which is a small thing that becomes a daily thing.

Ease of Use

If you've never pulled a shot before, you'll get a drinkable one in under a week. The assisted tamp is the killer feature — it'd be 'gimmick' on a $2k machine, but at this price, it's the difference between giving up and getting hooked. Pre-infusion is automatic. The descaling reminder actually makes sense.

Drink Quality

With Onyx Monarch dialed in, espresso pulls clean and balanced. Crema isn't competition-grade, but it's there, and it tastes right. Steam wand is single-hole, low-power — you'll need a minute or two for a pitcher of microfoam, but it gets there.

Value

At ~$899 it's in awkward territory: more than a Bambino + Encore, less than a Linea Mini. For a beginner who wants one-and-done, the value is excellent. For an experienced barista, you'll outgrow it.

Who Should Buy It

Buy this if you want one machine that grows with you for 2-3 years, you're tired of pod machines, and you're willing to put in 30 minutes of practice. Skip it if you already own a separate grinder or you're chasing temperature stability for back-to-back drinks.

Final verdict

4.3 / 5 — A confident yes for most home baristas.

Great gift, great way out of a coffee rut. It's not perfect, and it's not cheap, but it's the machine I'd put in front of a coffee-curious friend without a second thought.
